How the Tuesday cycle works
When a clearance item reaches the end of its markdown life without selling, Dollar General's system drops it to one cent as an internal signal to pull it from the floor. Those drops happen on Tuesday mornings, which is why every DG penny list refreshes early in the week and why Tuesday morning is the highest-odds time to shop. Verify before you drive
The rules below are the consensus from the list publishers themselves, and they hold up. Penny Pinchin' Mom's version of them is the cleanest:
- Use the Dollar General app as your price scanner, with your store selected. The system price is the truth, not the shelf tag.
- Match the list exactly — wrong size, color, or variety won't ring up for a penny.
- Look on high and low shelves, in seasonal clearance sections, and behind other products. Pulled-but-not-shipped items hide.
- Don't ask store employees about penny items. They're supposed to be off the shelves anyway.
- If it doesn't ring up for a penny at checkout, just don't buy it.
Penny events on the calendar
Crazy 4 Couponing's predicted 2026 Dollar General clearance event dates put the next two windows at August 28–31 (Labor Day weekend) and September 18–20 (fall seasonal). These are predictions from past patterns, not announcements, and timing can shift a week or more by region — verify in the DG app and store signage.
